Jupiter Hammon and Phillis Wheatley: Poetry, Politics, Faith and Voice

Historian and author, David Waldstreicher will explore the poetry and public voices of two published Black poets of the 18th century, Jupiter Hammon (born into slavery on Long Island) and Phillis Wheatley, highlighting their lives and work, similarities and differences in their style and politics, their relationship to each other, and their legacies. This lecture is among a series of programs in support of the Smithsonian traveling exhibition Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, on view at Preservation Long Island's Exhibition Gallery from March 23-May 3, 2024.
